The Two Mrs Nahasapeemapetilons
couch gag: Bart graffitis the family onto the couch
director: Steven Dean Moore
Andrea Martin as Apu’s mother
Jan Hooks as Manjula
Synopsis: Just as Apu is enjoying his bachelorhood, his mother informs him it’s time for his arranged marriage to Manjula.
Discussion: This is one of those rare episodes that add to the continuity of the series: Apu marries Manjula. The ep begins with an auction of Springfield’s most eligible bachelors (if you fancy a date with Moe or Barney, here’s your chance!) and Apu is sold to five desperate “chicks” who take turns going on dates with him. Just as he’s enjoying the bachelor life, along comes a letter from his mother, informing Apu that’s it time to meet and marry his betrothed, Manjula. Aww!
There are really three interwoven parts to this episode. Homer convinces both Apu and Marge to act like they’re married in order to cancel the arranged marriage. Having a need to stay away from his own house while Apu’s mother is there, Homer stays at the retirement castle where his father lives. Finally, when the facade of Apu and Marge’s “marriage” is over, the real wedding happens.
This is classic Simpsons. Homer’s bad plans and stint at the retirement castle are priceless. The bachelor auction is pretty much exactly as expected- hilarious! The Hindu wedding obviously had a lot of detail added and it’s perfectly executed in the Simpsons’ backyard (where else would you hold a wedding in Springfield?)
Wonder if Marge found that spicy castrati…?
