I watch, and blog, and watch and blog and watch. It's the Simpsons every day!

Mayored to the Mob

‘The President did it’ is not an excuse

Couch gag: The family are squished into a cube by a car-cube squisher thing.

Director: Swinton O. Scott III

Guest voices:
Mark Hamill as himself and Leavelle
Joe Mantegna as Fat Tony

Synopsis: While attending Bi Mon Sci Fi Con, Homer saves Mark Hamill from a mob and trains to be a bodyguard for the mayor. The mayor is receiving kickbacks from local businesses and the mob, and it’s up to Homer to save Quimby from being killed in the process.

Discussion: There are really two parts to the episode: Homer saving Mark Hamill, and Homer saving the mayor. Only one part works. Go on, guess which one.

If you’ve never been to a convention, not only do I encourage you to do so, but this ep shows a fairly accurate representation of what one is like. Minus the riot, of course. Springfieldians sure like to riot, which causes Quimby to quip, “Can’t we go one day in this town without a riot?” Spurred on by saving Mark Hamill, Homer decides to become a bodyguard and protect the mayor.

The ep goes along swimmingly until Fat Tony and the rat milk. Rat milk – EWWW! The plot point itself isn’t so bad, but the pace and tone of the episode falls flat. Mark Hamill seems happy enough to go along with every lame Star Wars line (or related song) which lifts the episode, only to fall again with the mobster bits.

Still, it’s an entertaining episode. The altered lyrics to Guys & Dolls to reflect Hamill’s most well-known role is just plain funny. And true- go to any convention and listen to the speakers. Fans only want to hear about their most famous roles. I guess it’s like going to a concert and not wanting to hear the artist’s new stuff. Anyhoo, I digress. This is one of Homer’s better jobs. Plus I think Ray-Bans really suit him…
