Milhouse Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

Couch gag: There’s a veggie patch in the living room. Someone waters it and the Simpsons grow.

Director: Matthew Nastuk

Guest Voices:
Nick Bakay as Salem
William Daniels as KITT
Dick Tufeld as the Lost in Space robot
Isabel Sanford as herself

Synopsis: Milhouse and his mother move to Capitol City, leaving Bart to be best friends with Lisa. Meanwhile, Homer earns extra money by begging on the street.

Discussion: Haven’t we seen this before? OK, panhandling (or begging) isn’t exactly grifting, but it’s close enough. They both result in Homer obtaining money not rightfully earned and giving gifts to Marge. Yawn.

However, the A plot in this ep is very sweet and something we’ve not seen in a while: Bart and Lisa hanging out and being besties. Personally, I think more could have been done exploring Milhouse’s new world without Bart as opposed to Bart’s newfound respect for Lisa… but that’s just me. It’s nice to get away from Simpson family-centred episodes occasionally and we don’t often see Milhouse in an environment without Bart. Maybe that’s the point- Milhouse is nothing without Bart but Bart is OK without Milhouse (eventually).

It’s because of this deja vu that I don’t love this episode. Shifting the focus to Milhouse’s adventures without Bart would have been something different but instead we have yet another serving of sibling bonding and Homer begging for money.
