The Homer of Seville
The Wall St Journal is better than ever
Couch gag: The evolution of Homer. Marge asks if he remembered milk instead of her previous “What took you so long?”
Placido Domingo as himself
Maya Rudolph as Julia
Synopsis: Homer discovers he can sing really well but only while lying on his back. The endeavour brings him a crazy PA named Julia.
Discussion: Again, this episode is really two-in-one. The opening scenes where the Simpsons gate crash a funeral to get free food is just creepy and weird, but leads to a discovery that Homer can sing fantastically but only while lying on his back. We know Homer can sing, he won a Grammy for his barbershop quartet, remember? This time he can sing opera, which is odd because I can’t see Homer remembering all that Italian. Anyhoo, he can sing.
Cue the second storyline, where he hires a PA who turns out to be a psycho hose beast named Julia. Julia has a huge crush on Homer, which leads to some interesting situations. This could probably be a whole episode on its own. Homer has seen temptation before (Mindy) and Lurleen had a crush on him as well. God knows how Homer can attract four women (including Marge), but anyway…
Luckily, the episode realises that it is completely stupid, with the question, “Is that even a thing?” being asked twice and answered in the negative. I spent half the episode wondering what the hell piece of rubbish this was and the other half wishing it had been this way the whole time. Based on two polar thoughts, the rating has to be average.
